Jim Walewander – 1989 Topps

Utility Infielder. Dead Milkmen Fan.

Is this a story that was lost to the sands of time?

Walewander was a bit player – a utility guy who was forced to play too much in 1988 when Lou Whitaker got hurt. He was part of the ‘Flaky Utility Guy’ fraternity founded by Phil Linz and Rod Kanehl.

He loved the Dead Milkmen. He played them in the clubhouse after he got a big hit, which had to shock some of the geezers on the Tigers. Of course, the Milkmen heard about him.

And now, for the best Milkmen song ever:

(I think the Milkmen were prognosticating the rise of the Tea Party with this one!)
